not sure when we'll actually start seein em, but it's some pretty crazy stuff. i know they use OLED screens for some phones and small devices. check out this vid (and yeah it's wesley crusher

the technology has been around since at least 2000 and could have been on the market by 2002 but sadly the technology is tied up in patent disputes, lawsuits, etc... until all that shit is settled we have to settle for inferior lcd, plasma, and dlp

from what i've read it's not out yet because they're still trying to develop red & blue "cells" or whatever the hell they're called that are bright enough for large production TVs that will last. basically the ones they have now don't have a long enough life span to warrant a production display.

yeah once they get the lifespan issues figured out, supposedly they'll be able to manufacture the shit in giant rolls like paper and it will bring huge, cheap, high resolution TVs to the masses. as well as stuff like newspapers/magazines/books made of it.

wil wheaton is the shit, and so are OLED tvs. the only real problem, like you said, are the lifespan problems. Aside from that they're super sweet.

the shit does work, the underlying technology is here today as you can see from the video... the lawsuits are over who owns the underlying technology and who owns the patents. the fact that it needs refined a bit before it's ready for the consumer market doesn't matter as the parties involved in the lawsuit know that will be resolved

My bad, I was confusing OLED TVs with SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) TVs (another competing technology).
Read about how this technology is superior to LCDs and was available for mass production as early as 1999 but has been delayed by incompetence and lawsuits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-condu...emitter_display Now whether or not SED is better than OLED I don't know. The two will probably end up being competitors like LCD vs. Plasma vs. DLP. At least I have the balls to post when I'm wrong about something unlike some people around here *cough* Impala *cough*. |
