if he leaves school early its his choice, he just better hope he doesnt get injured an manages his money well but theres no reason to retire his number. UT has had much better athletes that deserve their number retired before his.

but... that's... why... he's... leaving... school...... if he goes to the NBA and gets injured, he still makes tons of money. if he stays in school and gets injured, he makes no money.

One season of play, no matter how great the season, is not worthy of jersey retirement. What if he busts? Then UT looks like a bunch of fools for retiring the jersey of a flash in the pan.

maybe in the pros where people can have 15-20 year careers, but in college you don't have superstars with 15 years. at the absolute most you will have 4 years, and nowadays, if the guy is good enough to be worth of jersey retirement, he won't be around more than 1-2 years. so the option now is either stop retiring jerseys alltogether, or choose the best of the best, no matter how long they were there.

Colleges retire numbers for college accomplishments. What they do after college is inconsequential.

Brooks Kieschnick was elected to the College Baseball Hall Of Fame last year. His pro career was largely a flop, even though he was highly touted coming out of school and was a Top 10 pick. Should the college HOF not have elected him because of what he did in the pros? Of course not.
