ok I just read that article...man FUCK that shit...

I grew up eating about 14 bowls of apple jacks a day and I was a rail. why? because I fuckin played outside and rode my bike all over the damn place and had dirt clod wars and crap.

HOW CAN LIFE CHANGE THIS DRASTICALLY IN A SHORT TIME!??!

nowadays you have all these dormant inside activities and computers and crap (yes, we had atari, nintendo, etc, but that shit was reserved for early morning or late and night). we didn't have the internet as a baby sitter. but we sure had TV and consoles. so why wasn't everyone fat?

because we played. kids don't like playing anymore.

fuck kids

this shit is rubbing me the wrong way...

mark my words, these fat fucks are going to affect the criteria of the military. everyone's going to be so fat and pastey and computery that a perfect PFT score will be granted upon 2 pullups, 20 crunches, and a 30 minute 2-mile runtime...

sad.gif I know... I love cereal... always have. I would sit there and eat it out of the box. When I was a kid, though, we played outside everyday in the summer....raced our bikes, played ball and tag... nowadays kids have motorized scooters and ride them to their friends house to play xbox. The days we played inside were the days it was 110 outside, but then when 5:00 hit, we would run outside and play until 9. It was great... I miss being a kid. Seriously, I blame the parents.

I've felt the same way for a while now. When was the last time you saw a kid outside climbing a tree?

for reals?!

kids can't do that nowadays because they might fall. if they climbed a tree they'd need a helmet, a belay harness, a period of instruction, and note from their parents not holding the tree liable, REI climbing gloves and shoes, eye protection, SPF40 sunblock...

you're right it is parents.

my mom would kick me and my brothers out of the house and tell us to come home when it was time for dinner.

nowadays you'd call child protective services on someone like that.

I think it's a combination of this and parents becoming busier and busier nowadays which means they're going to be lazier when planning their child's nutrition. Instead of good home cooked meals, it's happy meals and shit like that.

I think it's fun being a little kid still (I see them playing all the time), but being a 4th grader? I dunno...

I think this is partially right. I used to play around outside every hour of daylight and then my parents would let me play outside at night in the summer and we'd play hide and seek and all kinds of shit until midnight. Of course we were in a new housing area with a lot of families so it was a "safe" environment. That also makes me wonder if shit was just safer back then or if it's my awareness level increasing as I've grown older and perceiving how dangerous the world is. Anyways, I was a skinny kid until about 4th or 5th grade, then I became a chubby fuck. I don't know if that's about the time I started playing nintendo or not, I don't remember specific ages that I did certain activities, it's all blended together.

yeah in the summer playing at night was the most fun. but yeah we too lived in a new whitebread neighborhood. I don't think the world has gotten worse, I think the news media has gotten bigger, which in turn affects our awareness, thus scaring us. I know I am guilty of it.

wild

edit: not my kid. I think the child emulates the parents. when my boy gets old enough to ride a bike, daddy will reliev his youth and buy a rad 24" BMX to ride with him. I still do a bunch of shit I used to (haven't skated in a couple years due to a bad hipper, but other than that...)
