that's a little surprising... it sounds like the apple computer market isn't doing so hot if they're resorting to this kinda stuff.

Let's say the Apple computer market was smoking hot... you still don't think a company would like to literally triple it's user-base by porting it to another OS?

This isn't because the Apple computer market sucks, it's just basic business and common sense at work.

well I probably said that wrong, I should have been a little more precise: the apple OS market sucks. imho it seems like the first scent of death on the apple's OS. I wouldn't mind checking out the browser though.

The main reason I think they are doing this is branding... They can put Safari on Windows for free and pull people to Macs. Doesn't sound like death at all to me. It sounds like you are making general assumptions from the release of a browser. I mean, when Microsoft announced IE for Macs did you think Windows was going away?

it just sounds to me like they're not getting the number of users they hoped for so they're willing to get it to a competitor's OS. honestly I think it's a good move for Apple as a whole, but it definitely doesn't say "hey come out and buy a apple computer with apple's OS".

and no, of course i didn't think windows was going away because IE was ported for apple. but then again windows had/has an enormous market share of desktop PCs so that would have been a pretty silly notion.

The reason for the port is probably to get web-page developers to develop for safari and quit ignoring it.

now that I can agree with for sure. I've been working on a personal site for a couple weeks and my first thought was "damn now I gotta test it in yet another browser".
