common sense... don't screw and you dont get pregnant/stds

there are most definitely parents out there who are not religious who also don't want their kids having sex.

Most definitely. I have no problem with schools emphasizing abstinence and giving parents an option between abstinence-only and abstinence+contraception sex ed classes for their kiddos. However, I think it's very useful for kids to learn about contraception and I think that banning talk of contraception in schools is a bad idea. After all, not all adult/married couples want to have kids immediately.

...sorry, sorry...DARK blond hair. tongue.gif

Many of the religious people in this town (Pentecostal, S. Baptist, Church of Christ) seem to think this way.

Same with those churchies that used to com e to campus and bitch about all Tech students being sinners.

But yes, I know...REAL Christians (*hopefully*) don't think in such a way. Just stirring the pot.

That's fine that people have different viewpoints. I don't care if people believe the Earth was created by a swarm of Martian fairies as long as they keep it to themselves. The problem is when what other people believe begin to impact me personally (i.e. policy decisions based on "religious beliefs")
But I don't expect to make an iota of an impact on any christian on a forum site, and vice versa.

I'd venture to say that a lot more government policy is amended on behalf of pleasing atheists and agnostics than is amended in favor of christians or other religions. In that sense, the disbelief of God is their religion, so policy is being impacted based on their religious beliefs.

ok if god created everything with a plan then why would he give certain animals scary ass fucking teeth? because thats the best to chomp leaves with? no. am i not digging deep enough into it? the evolution of teeth/digestion etc of animals is pretty straight forward. god must have been chomping too much of that green herb as well

so impala you are saying FEDERAL business being closed on sundays never had anything to do with religion or religious practices? the post office is a federal instituiton not a regular business. same as banks.
and you are saying the gay marriage ban has nothing to do with religious arguments? eventhough those with power have pretty much done everything contradictory to that belief short of branding religious proverbs onto gays. where did marriage come from? religious beliefs? why cant we have 6 spouses then? you cant honestly say you dont think Bush's religious beliefs as a born again christian has had nothing to do with some of these things. he talks about his strong beliefs, mentions god way too much hes sounding like islamic radicals
stem cell research has nothing to do with religious beliefs? or religious power? the mighty religious right wing has had nothing to say or do with that getting squashed into the ground?
and of course the crime of sodomy has nothing to do with religion! or in divorce court claiming your ex was an adulterer thus binding documents and divison of assets gets all torn apart has nothing to do with religion (not every state in the US is this backward in thought but for the states that are thats still policy set by the government)
a few of many imo

john ascroft what did he do in the government again? he wasnt a religious nutjob? he covered an artistic statue because her booby was out. come on he didnt believe in DANCING. bush has made nominations to people who are ministers, run their own churchs. that has nothing to do with religion?
so a country like iran isnt influenced by islamic beliefs? japan isnt influenced by shinto beliefs? they are but no america isnt?

Laws are made by the Majority. A majority can vote based on religious values...sure. But most the same religious values can be called "moral" values (lacking a religious basis.) The supreme court has viewed the days off on sunday not as based on religous values, but for a day of rest. As a country we enjoy our 2 day weekend... its part of our culture for whatever reason.

Gay marriage and stem cells blame the christians, but i think its a chicken and egg scenario. Did the christian beliefs create the conservative attitudes, or did the conservative nature lend more to the people being religious? And since most of the people who support both gay marriage AND stem cells are christian... it would appear that christianity CAN'T be a sole reason (most all democrats and independents are still religious.)

Here's something to chew on...

We (Christians) cannot expect the government to legislate our beliefs for us. It doesn't work that way. What, we can get people behaving better? This has never worked throughout history, Constantine declared "we're a Christian nation" and what, 200 years later the Roman empire ceased to exist.

The problem is that everyone wants something. Everyone wants representation and equal rights but they want their own individual beliefs and views to be of utmost importance. That can't happen without stepping on other people's toes. It's true that if we didn't have a belief in a higher being, we might be in a different situation. There wouldn't be conflict of religious views. People need to stop thinking they are better than everyone else because in the end you're just a rotting meat log 6ft. under. Stop trying to make life more than it is.
