Article
QUOTE A gunman opened fire at a vocational school for adults in western Finland on Tuesday before shooting himself, police said. Finnish media reported nine people were killed and the gunman was wounded. This was their second school shooting in a year. What's interesting is that I am IN Finland right now, so I think I'll be in a position to gauge the media reaction/coverage and people's sentiment versus that of the US (i.e. will there be "should guns be banned" arguments, etc...) -------------------- ![]() |

::facepalm:: how many incidents does finland have for school shootings? this is what? the first? with so few instances, i think that it's still proof that relaxed gun laws are not the issue. but you're too blind to see that -------------------- |

Those damn guns, killing people. People didn't used to kill other people before guns were invented.

Some things I've noticed:
When I first arrived in Finland (9/22) I saw a total of 1 flag on top of the parliament building. After the shooting, it was amazing, everywhere you looked there were flags at half mast. I took some pictures, it was astonishing. Haven't seen any sort of national morning like this since the US during September 11. In a country of 5 or so million, pretty much everyone is as affected (kind of like if you lived in Virginia during the whole V-Tech shootings). The newspaper also was interesting. It printed an entire issue the day after the shooting (like 40+ pages) discussing the various aspects -- the school, the shooter, the victims, the town. Now Finnish is a pretty crazy language (it is truly ridiculous) so I couldn't particularly understand what was being said... As for gun laws, Finnish people love to hunt. You see them at the airport carrying bags that you know are hunting rifles going out on a weekend trip (how they check those things, I have no clue). I think in the article, they are third per capita in gun owners behind US and Yemen. That's about it for now. -------------------- ![]() |

how many incidents does finland have for school shootings? this is what? the first? This is the second within a year. Keep in mind this is a country of 5 million. That would be like if there were two mass school shootings in the DC metro within a year (to put it in perspective). -------------------- ![]() |

I think school shootings happen because we're losing our Christian values. We need more religion in school. If people would just get right with God, natural disasters, starvation, epidemics, and school shootings would stop. Please, everyone, pray. Thank Jesus.

Never had school shootings in the 1800s! -------------------- |
