They showed that there was an anti-correlation to ClO and O3 in the atmosphere. Cat is totally correct with the reaction including Cl as the catalyst. It eventually travels down to the lower atmosphere, as it usually more dense when it combines with other elements. We actually have less O3 up there than 10 years ago, and still losing the amount, but the trend is going up. So yeah Chuck, you did question cat.

On carbon emissions, its what we worry about because its the largest amount of crap we put out. Its def a bad product, but we do not know if its effects are actually significant to cause the current changes and well as its contributions to the total. Global Warming proponents push it because of its large numbers and it seems overwhelming to the every day person. I do worry about the other crap our cars and industry put out. I do not know if smelting nickel for a Prius is worse than driving a H2. People do need to drive more efficient cars, recycle and be more conscious about their world. But consciousness should be coupled with education. Eric would know tons more than myself about global climates and Hartmann about world economics. No one can be an expert on everything.

Come on though Chuck it can't be that simple. If the whole thing could be explained away by two equations we wouldn't be sitting here arguing about it. Obviously we have smog layers around major cities, but how does the smog layer here over houston cause the temperature to rise in the rain forest? And if ozone is on an upward trend is that because of some legislation based crackdown or some other cause? How is the ozone coming back?


That's what really bugs me is the whole playing on numbers as a scare tactic. Obviously have a more fuel efficient car is a good thing, but moreso simply because it's cheaper than because of some environmental concerns we hardly understand yet. I also would rather see vehicles that are truly more efficient. Not just these cars with tiny engines and 800-1000 lbs lighter. I'd love to see a big 6,000 lb truck with 300hp that gets 40mpg.

Honestly I'm in the middle ground as far as who I believe. I just hate hearing environmental junkies who read a few websites and think they have the science figured out and spread the scare that we're about to destroy ourselves and start massive movements to change federal law. while the real scientists basically say that we don't really fully understand what's going on yet.

The guy has been a respected hurricane activity forecaster for 25 years and now the media is not going to use his forecasts anymore because the guy is a global warming skeptic. Yay media! Good news is bad news!

Ozone has to do with UV intensity and nothing to do with smog or global temp. Here is how the cycle works.
O2 is in the upper atmosphere, it gets hit with certain frequency of photons that causes the oxygens to split and become free raticle. The Lone oxygen combines with O2 to form Ozone. Ozone absorbs many different frequencies becuase it exist as a congagated compound. Congagated compounds have electrons that may exist in several different states, so they can absorb different frequencies of photons. O2 can only exist in about 6 states, with only one being really common, so it can essentially only absorb one frequency of photons.

What happens is that Chlorine combines with oxygen and makes it take less initial energy for O3 to chage to O2.

after awhile O2 is left in the upper atmosphere and Cl comes back down to lower atmosphere. O3 is regenerated by sunlight, but its a slow process.

So if we're seeing an upward swing in ozone then we've pretty much already corrected that particular problem. Or at least, reversed it.
