speaking as someone who has not 1 but 2 USELESS DEGREES (almost... in 3 weeks I will and I already know I passed all my classes), this thread is turning gay.
While I completely disagree with Cathryn as I believe she has her head in the clouds on this issue, Brandon's statements regarding her personal life are completely irrelevant and pointless to this thread as she never said that she needed the help. What I believe she is saying is that the oil companies and their moguls could lower gas prices if they simply cut into their billions of dollars in profits they are generating. Not only do they make more money than they can spend, but it would also benefit the American people. Not saying I agree with her at all, but her personal life has zilch to do with this as she is seeking a solution to the entire problem.... not just her own pocketbook |

Not only do they make more money than they can spend, but it would also benefit the American people. Not saying I agree with her at all, but her personal life has zilch to do with this as she is seeking a solution to the entire problem.... not just her own pocketbook Ok, first and foremost, ExxonMobil, Connoco, Chevron, are ****HUGE**** companies. They are not mom-and pop oil companies. The operations they have across the world, especially off-shore, are quite literally the terrestial version of the space program. They do not have the luxury of being government-funded. They have to develop this technology on their own. The oil and gas industry is far and away the most competitive and progressive industry in the world. It has to be, since it's the industry ALL OTHER INDUSTRIES ARE BASED ON. It has been proven time and time and time again by well-respected economists that they are NOT doing anything out of line. When you see these stupid ass senate hearings, it's a fucking political stunt. Pure and simple. Also, for those of you clamoring on about how they just need to lower the price of gas, THEY ARE NOT THE ONES WHO SET THE PRICES. Crude oil prices are based off the US dollar by global entities, not the fucking US oil companies. They're playing in the same field as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, etc, who all effectivley have state-run oil companies. Ever wonder why you don''t hear about the huge profits they make? Because their governments don't require them to have any kind of financial accountability because they own them. With that said, the US oil companies can't simply just say "oh well america feels bad so we'll just fuck ourselves over in the global market place so a bunch of illiterate dipshits in the US can feel good and Barack Obama can get elected president!" If you're wondering why the CEO's of those companies make so much it has a lot more to do with the fact that the directions they take their companies is successful, not counterproductive. Personally I am absolutley amazed the big 5, especially Exxon, make as much money as they do considering how much more complete bullshit they have to put up with foreign operators don't. I think it's seriously a tribute to good old-fasioned American work-ethic and enginuity, not the bullshit corrupt ceo crap all the fucking socialsts want you to believe. But then again I don't have a psychology degree so I guess I don't understand technical things like this. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

again dogmeat, when did i ever say i was an expert in anything? yes i happen to know more than the average joe about environmental issues and you apparently think YOU are the only one that does. philosophy is your other degree if i remember...and unless you plan on pursuing philosophy at the grad level, in the job market, all it does is serve as a piece of paper. This coming from someone who has worked in the real world for a while. The starting salary for someone with a psych degree is around 22k a year. both are degrees that require grade work to become substantive. Yes, they will get you a job where a bachelor's is required. yes they further improved your status as an educated person. Yes, they (the degrees) improved your writing skills, reasoning skills, etc. The possibility that you will work in a field using your degree is slim to none. Every psych major I know is either doing grad work or is working as a secretery or some other job completely unrelated to the field. It's just the nature of the business. do you even know i have a psychology degree? do you know what else ill have a degree in less than 3 weeks? do you know anything about me... cause apparently buddy, ya dont by the way my degree/s are far from useless And I was joking when I said useless. Honestly, I am one of the best writers in the journalism program here at Texas State, and I accredite that to skills I learned at Tech. My journalism degree will get me in the door at places... newspapers, etc. Philosophy did nothing. Most people don't even know what that is. I am glad I have that degree though. I really did learn a lot. Ok, first and foremost, ExxonMobil, Connoco, Chevron, are ****HUGE**** companies. why did i get quoted here? these are things I have been saying.

I think that kinda gives me a little bit more credibility that somone who's main claim to fame is 'oh well my professors say this and I watched an inconvienient truth nyaaaaaaaa nyaaaaaaaa' -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

they may not set it - i dont know anything about that, but i think they sure as hell can do something. The oil industry, especially exploration and drilling is given heavy tax breaks. The first step would be to stop giving tax breaks, the second would be to allow drilling to happen in places some people don't want. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

You guys need to pull your heads out and realize that american oil companies do not set oil prices. remember back about 15 years ago when gas was like $0.80/gallon? that was back when we produced enough oil for ourselves, and even exported some. well now that we're not allowed to drill to feed the expanding need for oil, we have to import something like half of what we consume. importing = expensive. so don't act like some dude at exxon just has a profit dial and an evil look on his face as he cranks it. it's muhammed abbabbabbajab towelhead over in saudi arabia with his 500 ft yacht and 400 bentleys that's making you pay more at the pump. we didn't drill ourself then cause it wasn't worth it to drill. And we pretty much imported from a US friendly south america. -------------------- Southern Rock, beer and bears!

The oil industry, especially exploration and drilling is given heavy tax breaks. The first step would be to stop giving tax breaks, the second would be to allow drilling to happen in places some people don't want. Explain this further ... How do you tax and/or give a tax break for "exploration and drilling" .... What taxes on these specific operations are there? I'm not dbouting it, I'm just not aware of the specifics ... again that shows how little you know about me! so you are an expert is what you are saying and you just think i picked up gargle a professor spewed at me? oh how very insightful and fair of you. sounds like you do a lot of thinking! werent you fired from your field engineering job? what does that have to do with global environmental issues? no i dont have a philosophy degree AND NOW IM DONE Yeah, I got fired. Now I'm working with their research and product development people. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!
