An you guys sure blow more smoke than anyone I talk to. "OMG 1% is a lot we need to do something!".

The only logical way to reduce this number is obviously:
1. People commit less crimes that land them in jail
2. We make less things illegal that put a person in jail.

#2 is stupid. #1 is not going to be fixed by helping education. #1 will be fixed by having harsher penalties for criminals, but since everyone seems to be focused on making penalties easier, and treating them like some poor little kid that got his hand caught in the cookie jar, #1 will never be fixed. in fact, it will continue to increase because people are less afraid to commit crimes.

Actually, #2 is not necessarily stupid. I don't think marijuana usage should be illegal, for instance. *shrugs*

So now I guess someone needs to look up a breakdown of what those 2 million people are in jail for.

hell, lets just assume it's 1/2 of them just to entertain the idea. now the number of people in jail is 0.5%. does that make you all feel better? 0.5% of american adults in jail instead of 1.0%?

how do you explain progressive prisons that focus on rehabilitation see less and less excons returning to prison than your standard hard time chain gang prisons that are sometimes a century old?

or do you just stab yourself in the brain and refuse to acknowledge that?

How do you explain that they actually do work? Or am I just supposed to believe everything you say since you never post any kind of data that supports all the stuff you pull outta your ass?

I've watched several reports on prison systems that have rehabilitation tactics. One prison allows the prisoners to take care of dogs from the shelter (until a home is found for them). Because the prisoners have a responsibility to maintain good behavior and care for the animal, they are actually being rehabilitated in a way. That prison has a very very low return rate. Most cons that leave there never return to prison. It's kind of a neat tactic if you ask me.

It's pretty ironic to me that you do not at least quote the post you're talking about when you accuse me of not including sources.

Well, when you consider that the recidivism rate in TX is around 80%, I would imagine it would pay for itself in the long run.

shut up impala. you're the biggest bullshit artist on these boards. you try to hide your illogical and over generalized answers behind pretty words and looping sentances. when you are defeated in an arguement, you completely ignore what was said, and try to pick out a single PART of a sentance that isn't even the focus of the arguement and attack that, so that it appears you are still debating. sit down and shut up, you sound way more intelligent when you aren't speaking.

I think the shelter paid for the food and upkeep of the animals. The prison just had to let the dogs stay with the prisoners in the cell and give the prisoners time out in the yard to play with the dogs and let them do their business. I'm not positive though. Something like this seems like it would be cheap to run though since both the prison and the animal shelters are usually government funded. I think most of these guys were violent offenders too. The point was to help them be calm and work with problems and stuff. The dogs were routinely checked to make sure they were being taken care of properly.

Another fun fact (if 1% is a big number) how about this number to boggle your mind:

2.5 million WoW subscribers in the US = ~0.83% = ~ 1 in 115
(although the ratio would be higher if you remove the age groups that don't play the game)

10 million total worldwide = ~ 0.15% = ~ 1 in 600 people on the earth play WoW
