So, I am finally looking at investing in one of these suckers.
Anyone have ideas? I have been looking at the TomTom, as a few of my friends have them. I like the whole map-sharing feature and the customization. I kinda don't wanna spend more than $200 |

Do they have the ability to use bluetooth GPS radios on the iPhone yet? IMHO that's the way to go. I got a great bluetooth GPS device, about the size of a matchbook, for only about $40 and it just uses your existing PDA/phone. Cool part is you can use it places other than the car, as well as try out different softwares (google maps, live, tomtom, etc). The complete car GPS units are essentially just a PDA w/the manufacturer's software built-in.
As far as the actual full blown car GPS units, I have used the TomTom software and it worked pretty well. |

I have the TomTom too. The One, or something like that. TomTom has a list of supported phones that work with Bluetooth and the iPhone wasn't on the list that came with mine, but it works anyway. It doesn't support the GPS part though. Just the ability to make and receive calls. It also transfers all my addresses that I have from the iPhone to the TomTom. Mine also has the FM transmitter. The map sharing feature is pretty cool. Thhe TomTom software is easy to use, but almost too easy. It's like they dumbed it down for stupid people.

So, I was looking at the TomTom One XL....ad it has the bluetooth. Would I be able to use the updated traffic and such with my iPhone?? It's on the Sams Club site for $200
Impala, the ones I am looking at can be used outside of the car also...I guess the antenna is built-in. The TomTom ones are "pocket-sized." I kinda want one where you dont have to constantly buy new maps....and I've been reading and I think new domestic maps are free??? |

Even better, look at what's on w00t every now and then and buy a cheap model (~$100 most times) and then there is usually a hack to get Tom Tom maps on it (I've done it once for a friend).
I would say Impala's suggestion is the best, but this works if you want a full blown device. -------------------- ![]() |

My dad recently got GPS for all the cars in his department. Some were TomTom and some were Magellan. After a couple months of use, he prefers TomTom over Magellan. Use that information however you wish, but figured it'd add a nice comparison opinion to the discussion.

OK, so i bought it.....TomTom ONE XL....
I am liking it so far!! Nice sized screen....like 4.3" It came with a USB cable to hook it upto the computer. Ive been able to download new voices, so right now I've got Yoda leading me around town. Also was able to change the bootup and shutdown screens. Um, also updated with the mapshare thingy. So, we shall see as I continue to use it!! |
