Well that's what I don't understand... What difference does it make how much charge is in the battery if it's not going to be on? When you turn off the laptop the battery is no longer being charged or discharged, there is no heat at all. I'm not trying to argue, just trying to understand the thinking behind the idea.

Dunno the physics behind it. But that's what every computer manufacturer recommends with their batteries.

The only good thing about the Macbook Air is the touchpad gestures. And couldn't that be added to other macs via a software update?

Speaking of which, when the heck is 10.5.2 coming out?!?!? I need my airport/keychain problem fixed because now it doesn't work right on my boyfriend's network. crying.gif

Really, I have a lot of wireless problems with tech's wireless network too... sad.gif

Same boyfriend. But he changed the password on his wireless network to make it a little easier to enter on the new Wii (it had been a 64-digit alphanumeric key), which changed my keychain entry, and now it doesn't work. Basically, even though it's in the keychain, airport doesn't see it for some reason. So I can enter in the password to manually connect, but it can't automatically connect when returning from sleep. It's a known issue and it sounds like it might be fixed in the next update.

i think the macbook air is marketed towards women. or at least only women find it attractive.
i've only heard girls drool over it, while most men look at it and think that it's ok, but lacking in performance.

As to why the gestures can't be added to MBPs, the controller for it is the same as the iPhone so it is more than just software driven.

Yeah for sure. IMHO the point of a laptop is to be portable. This wafer thin notebook from apple seems like it will be pretty nice to that point. I just personally do not care for the lack of an optical drive. In practicality, they probably could have made the thing 1/8-1/4" thicker and had one. But they removed it so they could make it even thinner and make a statement. I don't mind when companies try to make a statemnet in their new products, I just hate to see it come at the expense of practicality. It's not like this thing would have been any less portable if it was 1/4" thicker.

edit: and btw, I think the smart car + turbo analogy is a pretty dumb one. I for one would definitely have some nice electronics gear in a fast car. I'm going to start an old car project some time after I get my house down here (prob 65-70 Impala or 66-71 Chevelle, with a big block), and I will for sure have a newer stereo with possibly a custom built computer+touchscreen, etc.

I was just using the analogy because zetec did.

For me, the MB Air just doesn't have enough to warrant a purchase besides being portable. I would have much rather them produced a 1" thick 12" screen laptop with enough computer power to do some light programming, run e-mail, and surf the web. This laptop doesn't have enough ports for my taste and while neat looking isn't really suited to what I need it for.

Yep, it's too light on power, the USB port is apparently difficult for some USB items to fit into, and I've heard the battery run time isn't all that great.

I also think for the price it should INCLUDE the USB optical drive.

It's just too expensive for what it's offering.

A laptop with as much power as a desktop is just as stupid as a smart car with a turbocharger. I think Impala agrees with me on this point.

I'm not saying it has to have desktop power, I agree with you there. I just want more power and connectivity (the latter being more important to me) than the Air seems to offer. The lack of a built-in optical drive is a big issue with me.

And as far as the analogy goes, it was the first one that popped into my mind, not necessarily a good one.

Ergo sum, blow me. tongue.gif

How much does anyone actually USE the optical drive on their laptop?

I use it roughly 34-36 times a day. Listening to cds I purchased when I was a teenager.

I frequently use mine. Software installation, playing games, watching DVDs...

Ok, I'll admit that this was a stupid question.

But at any rate, the lack of an optical drive wouldn't bother me. I think of DVDs more as being just another thing to lose or get scratched up. I wouldn't buy one though. I don't have any problem with lugging my macbook around in my backpack (it's still lighter that most other laptops). I might buy one if I had a lot of money to blow, though I would probably buy a MacBook Pro if that was the case. I need to become filthy rich. sad.gif
