Say it with me... "self fulfilling prophecy." Which do you think is going to get better teachers... a school in a rich area that pays well or a school in a poor area that pays terribly? The underpaid and overworked teachers that work in these schools have the mentality that the kids are nothing and can't succeed at anything.

Better paid and better qualified teachers are less likely to have this mentality.

So yes, when well spent, money can buy ambition in terms of education.

I don't think that's ambition though. I think it's "not sucking at your job because you're bored".

Look, yes, more money needs to be spent in poorer areas to help boost the education there but it doesn't just lie on the government to solve people's problems.

I went to a middle class high school and there were plenty of kids who went into the military, got jobs, or became parents immediately after graduating. There's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with being blue collar. Not having a college education does not make you stupid. Neither of my parents have 4 year degrees, in fact, my dad was a drop out. Now he makes six figures doing a job he enjoys. Wanna know how he got there? He worked his ass off and wasn't handed stuff because people felt sorry for him.

Handouts aren't the answer. There is a lot to be said for a loving home that encourages their children. Should a child who has a crackwhore mom be burdened by her decisions, no, but they also shouldn't be coddled into thinking they deserve something.

Of course. Because if they were coddled into thinking they deserve something, then they would be in a rich school.

While I agree that rich kids have the same problem, the issue with the lower and middle classes thinking they deserve something is that they expect the government to give it to them. The government isn't around to provide everything for us, it's around to provide the security for us to provide for ourselves.
