i can't believe you paid for that. they're like $700 a language. i've got it installed on my computer with about 5-6 different languages and all courtesy of the pirate bay. Err, some of us believe in paying good money for good products? Now paying for Adobe Pro when all I need to do is crop some damn files, on the other hand... |

How hard is Japanese with Rosetta Stone? I've thought about getting it. It's not particularly difficult. I can't speak very well to its effectiveness yet, as I'm only a quarter through Japanese level 1 (I bought levels 1-3). You might want to supplement it with some written material, like a book on grammar. I'm not convinced that they do a good job teaching the kana, but my listening/reading comprehension and speaking does seem to be improving. They do have something like a 60-day money-back guarantee, so there's not much risk in trying it out. Also, we successfully installed it on two different computers and you can have up to four users total without purchasing additional licenses. |

Still married, still living in Austin. I am: 1) Working on my PhD (currently busting ass on a conference paper) 2) Tutoring 3) Kicking butt in Crossfit (LOVE it!) 4) Learning Japanese w/ Rosetta Stone 5) Learning more ASL by tutoring a deaf guy in calculus |

Yep, men. Women are generally more emotional. I definitely fall on the more logical side of the spectrum -- probably part of the reason I don't have many female friends. |

Given out for research that "makes people laugh and then think". My favorite this year is probably the Ig Nobel Peace Prize: QUOTE Peace Stephan Bolliger, a pathologist from the University of Bern in Switzerland accepted the Ig Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of his team for finally solving the long-pondered question of whether being bashed on the head with a full bottle of beer is preferable to being bashed on the head with an empty one. If you happen to be in a bar brawl, the full bottle is the one to choose because empty ones are sturdier, but both are strong enough to break the human skull, Bolliger said. Full beer bottles are likely to quickly explode because of the pressure built up in the bottle. The study's findings are relevant to court cases in which bottles have been used as weapons. So Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize. Thoughts? I like Obama, but I think this prize was awarded prematurely. It would be more meaningful if Obama had actually gotten some peace-inspiring accomplishments under his belt, rather than just the hope of such. |

... is pretty interesting, but stressful too! I'm in ME, but I'm learning a lot about circuits this semester. I'm taking a graduate mechatronics course and TA'ing the undergrad mechatronics lab, so I'm finally learning circuit design (hip hip hooray!). Also learning about bond graphs (something I NEVER heard about at Tech) and energy methods for modeling physical systems across energy domains. Research-wise, I'm working on design & control of off-shore wind turbines. Neat stuff. What is everyone else up to, whether school or work or personal projects? |

I read an interesting article the other day on San Francisco's public health care program that went into effect last year. I've been meaning to do some more research into it, but haven't gotten a chance to yet. Here's the article if anyone cares to take a read: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/22/opinion/22dow.html |

Adopted a new bird. 4-year-old rescue bird, a blue crown conure named Coco. Got him/her off to the vet and all checked out today. Labwork won't be back for a few days (probably early next week), but he looks to be in good condition. Gender DNA results likely won't be back for a couple of weeks. perhaps. what are the concealed carry laws in texas vs other states? aren't they very lapse in texas vs others? Texas will issue concealed carry permits to both residents and non-residents. Texas is one of only seven states (+DC) where open carry is explicitly prohibited except under limited circumstances (on own property, hunting, self-defense). Most states, including Texas, are "shall issue" CCL states, whereas some are "may issue". Vermont and Alaska allow non-felons of a certain age to carry concealed without a permit. Wisconsin and Illinois prohibit concealed carry entirely. So no, I wouldn't say that Texas' gun laws are lax compared to other states. Their prohibition of open carry actually makes them more restrictive than most. |

I don't usually like okra, but we've been getting it in our CSA box and they included that Indian okra recipe. Simple and very tasty, though I over-salted it a bit. Have you had raw asparagus? |
